Vacancy: Climate Change Scientist at the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF)

Climate variability and change will exert ever more pressure on agricultural land, potentially restricting the ability of farmers in developing countries, in particular smallholders, to sustain their livelihoods. At the same time there are opportunities related to a changing climate that need to be identified and explored.
Modelling is central to the understanding of interactions and processes involved in climate impact assessment, adaptation and mitigation, and can support improved decision making. For ICRAF to successfully address these issues on climate change, ICRAF’s Climate Change Unit is looking to fill the position of a Climate Change Scientist to be based at its Headquarters in Nairobi.
Call For Input & Engagement: World Economic Forum and the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development
The World Economic Forum (WEF) and the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development would like to invite interested parties to lend their expertise to advance ‘financing solutions for climate smart agriculture’ in Vietnam. This pilot work forms an important part of the Forum’s Green Growth Action Alliance, a multi-stakeholder effort that aims to bridge the finance gap in green investment through the development of finance innovations.
The objective for the work in Vietnam is to develop a finance product that can effectively illustrate how finance could be leveraged in climate smart agriculture (CSA), which would then be assessed for replication in other regions. In consultation with local and international representatives from finance and agriculture sectors, project developers and international / development finance institutes, a range of potential financing solutions to help overcome barriers to CSA in Vietnam were developed. Financing proposals in the area of agroforestry and public-private partnerships to advance collateralised solutions for sustainably-produced commodities have now been selected for further development, with the inclusion of the possibility to use bonds.
To help advance these proposals into actual products and deliver a blueprint by the end of June this year, the WEF and Vietnamese Government welcome input in the next months from experts in the area of finance (particularly bond development, agriculture investment and asset management, not necessarily limited to Vietnam), as well as in climate smart agriculture and low carbon modelling (in Vietnam or broader Mekong delta). Input can be provided through participation in regular working group calls, or in writing.

Vacancy: Researcher on Climate Change based in India

The CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) is seeking a consultant to be based at the New Delhi office of the International Water Management Institute, possibly an individual who has recently completed a relevant PhD, to develop/adapt and evaluate such tools, and demonstrate their application at different scales in South Asia. The specific objectives of this research are as shown below.

This special issue will explore the phenomenon of environmentally induced displacement (EID). From climate change to extractive industries, from ‘natural’ disasters to increased urbanization, from conservation to mega-projects, landscapes and peoples’ place on them are being transformed at an unprecedented scale across the globe. We suggest that these as well as many other processes provoke specific forms of environmentally induced displacement and forced migration, confronting communities with the loss of their land and other vital resources. Vacancy: Regional Program Leader for Southeast Asia
Deadline: 30 October, 2012. The CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) is looking for a Regional Program Leader for its new region Southeast Asia. CCAFS has initially focused its work on three regions: South Asia, East Africa, and West Africa. These regions were chosen to represent areas that are becoming both drier and wetter and because they will generate results that can be applied and adapted in other regions worldwide as the program evolves.
In 2012, CCAFS is expanding to two new regions: Southeast Asia and Latin America. We are seeking applications from a qualified candidate who will play a crucial role in partnership development and management in Southeast Asia. He/she will mainly be responsible for ensuring coherence among CCAFS themes from field to regional level and will play a key role in achieving outcomes and impacts at national and regional levels. Vacancy: Internship at the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture
Deadline: Ongoing recruitment. The Decision and Policy Analysis Area (DAPA) of the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) is seeking English speaking recent graduates for 6-12 month internships. CIAT is an international research center, one of the fifteen global centers of the Consultative Group on International Agriculture Research (CGIAR). Located in Cali, Colombia and working on international projects in Africa, Asia and Central and Latin America, the DAPA Research Area evaluates the effects of climate change, evaluates technology and knowledge gaps, critically analyses environmental and agricultural policy in Latin America, and considers barriers to market access for small, rural producers in developing countries.
The interns will gain experience in international research for development, and will be actively encouraged to use the internship as a stepping stone to further education at the masters or PhD level. Read more »
Vacancy: Science Officer for Theme Linking Knowledge with Action

Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) conducts research in 23 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. ICRAF is hosting the research leader of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) Theme 4.1: Linking Knowledge with Action. Activities within CCAFS’s Linking Knowledge with Action research theme involves identifying key communication, engagement/partnership and capacity strengthening strategies, tools and approaches that enhance the likelihood that the wide range of knowledge generated by this complex programme leads to actions that help sustainably increase food security. Call for Proposal: PhD research grants on climate change mitigation in smallholder agriculture
Deadline: 30 September, 2012. Purpose of this call: The Climate Food and Farming (CLIFF) Research Network is an initiative of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen and Aarhus University. The aim of the CLIFF network is to build the capacity of young scientists, generate new and rigorous knowledge for climate change mitigation in small-scale farming and food systems and facilitate the sharing of this knowledge.
For the current call, we invite enrolled PhD students to submit applications for research grants of up to USD 5000. The grants should support PhD research on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and carbon (C) sequestration associated with climate change mitigation in food production systems in developing countries1. Specifically, these grants must be used to support field measurements, sample analyses and modeling related expenses. Read more »
