Don't be like the old lady who swallowed a spider to catch a fly

In a colourful keynote speech this morning, the Terrestrial Carbon Group's Ralph Ashton exhorted participants to take a coordinated approach to solving long-term issues related to agriculture, climate change and food security. Anything less than this, warned Ashton will leave us like the "old lady who swallowed the fly," who tries to solve her problem by a series of incremental solutions, each one creating new problems.

"She swallowed the cat to catch the bird, she swallowed the bird to catch the spider, she swallowed the spider to swallow the fly… I guess she'll die"

Ashton was speaking at the Global Conference on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change, promoting the new Land 2050 initiative, coordinated by the Terrestrial Carbon Group.
