Postdoctoral Fellow – Systems Modeler/Agronomist at ICRISAT-Patancheru, India
The position is based at ICRISAT- Chitedze Research Station, Lilongwe, Malawi and ICRISAT-Patancheru, India and reports to the Research Program Director Innovation System for the Drylands.
The job and responsibilities:
- Provide scientific leadership in applying crop modelling frameworks (APSIM) to the research for development that leads to more sustainable smallholder farming systems for the target regions of east and southern Africa.
- Find farm level agronomic interventions that improve the performance of existing cropping systems and test/simulate and introduce new agronomic systems, crop types and varieties.
- Utilise and further develop, parameterise crop modelling frameworks and approaches that help our understanding of the trade-offs that farmers face in adopting technologies.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams from ICRISAT, Michigan State University and other CGIAR Centers and with National Agricultural Research Institutes, regional organizations and higher education institutions.
- Contribute to the resource mobilization efforts of ICRISAT and the CGIAR Research Programs, through writing research proposals, building capacity in our partners, engaging with the University sector by co-supervising postgraduate students.
Essential criteria:
- PhD degree in agriculture, crop science, soil science, natural resource management or related discipline with experience in systems related research.
- Significant expertise in the parameterization, validation and application of crop models, preferably APSIM, in agronomic research and incorporation of findings into extension material and publications.
- Strong statistical knowledge of computer applications and software for data management and analysis.
- Good publication record, as evidenced by research papers in refereed journals.
- Excellence in English (both spoken and written).
- Experience in working with a wide range of stakeholders and interest to work in interdisciplinary team.
- Willingness/ability to be flexible in location of base between India and Malawi.
Desirable criteria:
- A high level of competency in the design and implementation of field-based experiments.
- GIS and spatial analysis skills.
- Understanding of semi-arid smallholder farming systems and their constraints and opportunities for sustainable intensification.
- Demonstrated ability to write proposals and fund raise.
General:
The position is initially for Two years, and extendable depending on performance of the incumbent.
