The first of five work package papers commissioned for the Transforming Food Systems Under a Changing Climate initiative, on adaptation pathways, will be launched at an event at the Global Donor Platform for Rural Development Annual General Assembly.

Background

It is apparent that climate change adds an extra dimension to the more general challenges of rural development, and that the current pace of change is inadequate in relation to the poverty, nutrition and climate-related outcomes being sought. Many believe that a fundamental transformation in the food system is needed, not only to deal with poverty, food security and climate adaptation, but also to reduce the environmental footprint of the food system. The private sector is likely to be a major player in such a transformation but how will its involvement impact different sectors of the rural population?

Objectives

This meeting has two objectives:

  1. To discuss the different adaptation pathways that will be needed for different sectors of the rural population, how inclusive so-called inclusive business models can be, and some of the key leverage points for meeting adaptation and transformation goals. The results of this discussion will feed into a CCAFS’ synthesis report for the Transforming Global Food Systems under a Changing Climate initiative.
  2. To exchange updates of donors (and others’) latest initiatives related to climate-resilient agriculture, to support coordination and collaboration in policies and programmes.

About the consultation session (Part I):

We look to discuss the different adaptation pathways that will be needed for different sectors of the rural population, how inclusive so-called inclusive business models can be, and some of the key leverage points for meeting adaptation and transformation goals.

Two key questions will be explored:
 
  1. Are the proposed adaptation pathways sufficiently realistic? Do they cover most of the likely situations in rural areas?
  2. Are the mechanisms proposed to drive each pathway appropriate, incl. for marginalised groups?
Comments will be used to modify to inform the final text of the above-mentioned synthesis report.
 
About the deep dive session (Part II):
 
One of the Donor Platform thematic workstreams, on climate-resilient agriculture, seeks to support donors in positioning agriculture and rural development in the climate framework, as well as in sharing lessons of ARD-climate initiatives.
 
In this deep dive session, donors will have space to share updates of their current ARD-climate programmes, as well as other information relevant for donors and partners around the table who overlook/work with climate-related initiatives in their organisations.
