Welcome from CIAT Director General Ruben Echeverría

The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) has been very proud to have led CCAFS during its first phase. CCAFS has had many successes; it has led to millions of farmers increasing productivity and adapting to climate change; and some of the most quoted – and utilized – science coming from CGIAR.

Fundamental to such successes have been the partnerships that CCAFS has built, with CGIAR centers and research programs as well as with growing numbers of national and sub-national governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.

With partners, we are striving for even greater successes in the future, because to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs), new technologies and enabling policies need to reach almost all of the globe’s half-billion smallholder farmers by 2030. All farmers will need – and deserve – to be protected against extreme weather events. To achieve the SDGs, the agriculture sector needs to contribute to climate change mitigation by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 1 gigatonne per year by 2030.

These are grand and global challenges requiring transformed food systems and, likewise, transformed research efforts. Building on learning from Phase 1, CCAFS – and with it CGIAR – is poised to address these challenges.
