Farmers, agriculture and the UNFCCC
Read a report back from the event
For some years, attention has been building on the links between agriculture and climate change, with debates gaining momentum within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and outside. However, progress on addressing issues relating to agriculture within the UNFCCC processes will need sustained lobbying from farmers, youth and other concerned citizens.
Higher temperatures, changing rainfall patterns and increasingly severe weather associated with climate change are expected to have a major impact on food security around the world. Experts believe including formal discussions on agriculture in the climate talks would help ensure farmers get the information and financial help they need to maintain food production and improve farming livelihoods, especially in the face of population growth.
In conjunction with the UNFCCC COP20 in Lima, Peru, the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) is hosting a half-day event to raise awareness among farmers’ representatives and youth representatives on the status of agriculture in the negotiations, provide a networking space for farmers, and also exchange ideas on influencing agriculture in the UNFCCC going forward to the post-2015 agreement and beyond.
This event is by invitation only.
