Register now for this hackathon challenge to promote ICT innovations and entrepreneurship in agriculture.

One of the three categories of the Durban AgriHack challenge focuses on climate change. The Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) is collaborating with the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS).

Indeed, climate change brings about new challenges for farmers and the way they understand the climate. But with better and easier access to climate information, the stakeholders will be able to manage climate variability and make better decisions, bringing solutions that will help farmers to reduce the risk of crop failure and have better yields.

There are various existing databases that contain useful information that can be used by stakeholders to better cope with climate, but this information needs to be made more accessible and be presented in a more user-friendly way. This is where you come into the picture: We challenge you, and your team, to develop ways to turn this available data into useful and accessible information for farmers; to help them better adapt to and manage climate variability, rather than having climate instability manage them.

Examples of problems to address by your app:

  • How can I increase my production and  income?
  • How can I increase my production levels?
  • How can I maintain year-round production?
  • How can I become competitive with regards to international prices?
  • How can I improve the nutritive quality of the food I produce and improve my food security?
  • How can I use agricultural production to increase employment levels in my region?

Use our open access climate change datasets to develop your platform!

Information available are related to:

  • Sustainable agricultural practices
  • Current and future climate variables
  • Agricultural markets and product prices
  • Input providers / supplier information
  • Alternative agricultural management practices
  • Complementary crops
  • Water resources
  • Seed varieties
  • Other regions with similar agricultural conditions

How to get involved:

  • Only teams (at least two people) can participate
  • One person in each team must have expertise in agriculture-related issues. This person can be student in agronomy, agriculture extension officer, farmer, etc.
  • All other members of the team attending the hackathon has to be between 18 and 35 years old. These members of the team can be programmers, designers, etc.
