COP23: The science-policy interface for climate-smart agriculture in action: What are the lessons learned?

Agriculture is likely to be the sector most affected by the impacts of climate variability and change. At the same time, many countries have pledged to reduce their emissions following the landmark Paris Agreement in 2015, and many developing countries thus included agriculture and land use change in their NDCs both as a mitigation opportunity and an adaptation priority. In this context, Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) is being promoted as a way for agriculture to both mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
To promote CSA in policies and investments, various efforts have worked at the science-policy interface to catalyze action. In more than 30 countries globally, CSA Profiles used a policy-engaged process that highlights impacts of climate change, identifies promising CSA practices, and reviews the institutional, policy and financing environment. This profiling and engagements, such as the International Center for Tropical Agriculture’s “Climate Policy Hub” for Asia, represent a new paradigm for providing evidence to support decision-making that foster the agricultural transformations needed to address climate change.
The objective of this side-event is to uncover the lessons learned through CSA Profiling, policy hubs, and other science-policy engagements, to improve decision-making in a world often characterized by increasingly complex policy issues as well as information overload. This event targeted at government officials, development organizations, researchers, the private sector and civil society, aims to highlight key reflections that can be drawn from specific engagements globally for promoting CSA in policies and investments.
