COP23 side event: Youth Engagement in Climate Smart Agriculture: Opportunities and Challenge
To address the climate change challenge and other environmental issues, it is very important to change the perception of youth towards agriculture and provide capacity building opportunities and support for their active participation in sustainable agricultural development using climate-smart agriculture (CSA) approaches to meet the demands of the increasing global population in manner that will ensure reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (i.e. mitigation) from this sector, as well as enhancing the sector’s resilience to climate change (i.e. adaptation).
Objectives:
This side event will showcase the collective action of a global youth network (CSAYN) and partners to make the links between climate change and agriculture more clear.
The side event also seeks to:
- Highlight the potential role of youth in climate-smart agriculture and share with youth participants the existing opportunities within the agricultural value chains;
- Share experiences including challenges and opportunities of young farmers and success stories of CSAYN Global Coordination Unit (GCU) about youth in climate-smart agriculture with the wider participants;
- Share with youth participants the potential role of agriculture in contributing towards the attainment of the adaptation and mitigation targets in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of developing countries.
Expected outcomes:
- Greater appreciation of opportunities for young people in agriculture
- Increased awareness of participants on the role of youths and global agriculture in providing solutions to global climate change challenges, including meeting NDCs targets;
- Increased efforts and commitments from young people in the fight against climate change.
