Alcade Segnon

Alcade Segnon is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), West Africa Regional Program, based at ICRISAT West Africa regional office in Bamako, Mali.

Prior to joining CCAFS, Alcade was a Climate Change Adaptation Expert for the Laboratoire des Sciences et Techniques de l’Eau et de l’Environment (LSTEE) of the University of Abomey-Calavi, where he led the vulnerability assessments in four sectors (energy, forestry, tourism and urban planning & infrastructure) in Benin, commissioned by the “Projet Plan National d’Adaptation” (National Adaptation Plan (NAP) project implemented by the UNDP). He also conducted the synthesis of climate change vulnerability and adaptation research in Benin as part of his assignment.

Prior to that, he was a Project Assistant and Research Analyst at Climate Analytics gGmbH, supporting the implementation of the “Science-based National Adaptation Planning in Sub-Saharan Africa (PAS-PNA)” project in Benin and Senegal, through vulnerability assessment, capacity building and stakeholder engagement activities. Alcade was a Research Scholar at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), West Africa Regional office in Bamako, Mali within the “Adaptation at Scale in Semi-Arid Regions (ASSAR)” project. ASSAR is one of the four research programmes funded through the Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia (CARIAA). During his stay at ICRISAT, he also contributed to the CCAFS program. He continues to be an Associate Researcher to the Laboratory of Genetics, Horticulture and Seed Sciences (GBioS), Faculty of Agronomic Sciences, University of Abomey-Calavi in Benin.

Alcade hold a BSc and M.Sc. in Agronomy from the University of Abomey-Calavi, Benin and has just completed his PhD in Environmental Science at the University of Ghana. Alcade’s research interest is the interface of agricultural sustainability and utilization of plant resources in agroecosystems. He is particularly interested in how agrobiodiversity and knowledge that local people share on it can be used to design agroecological farming systems and improve smallholders' food security and livelihoods in the context of a changing climate. Recently, he has been exploring the climate change adaptation-agrobiodiversity harnessing nexus in semi-arid areas of West Africa. Alcade is also involved in the Global Adaptation Mapping Initiative (GAMI) and the IPCC process as a Contributing Author (CA) on Chapter 16 of the IPCC AR6 WGII report.
