In this magazine article, Giriraj Amarnath, Research Group Leader for the Water Risks and Disasters theme at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) brings to the fore the scientific interventions that can help mitigate the impacts of disasters such as the recent floods in the South Indian state of Kerala. Also highlighted in this article is the efficacy of Index Based Flood Insurance in the event of such calamities, in bringing relief to farmers. The research is supported by the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security.
