COP22 side event: Youth engagement in climate-smart agriculture in Africa
Over the years, African youth have proved their potential in promoting and implementing climate change adaptation projects. These innovations are largely driven by climate change impacts. However, the youth face various challenges that include low technical capacity and education, high rates of poverty and lack of financial resources. Within the context of agriculture, African youth continue to battle challenges associated with the negative perception of agriculture as a “difficult” job with little returns and also lack of access to land and markets. The side event will discuss youth engagement in climate-smart agriculture (CSA) and the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.
Objectives of event:
- Explore the contribution of African youth to CSA and showcase examples of youth taking the lead in CSA
- Highlight youth skills gap in the uptake and implementation of CSA, including resource gaps
- Identify available opportunities and incentives to promote youth engagement in CSA
The event is organized by the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security, East Africa (CCAFS), Climate Smart Agriculture Youth Network (CSAYN) and CLIMDEV-Africa Youth Platform (ACLYP)
