Hosted by the Government of the Netherlands, it will virtually convene global leaders with local stakeholders and set out a comprehensive Adaptation Action Agenda. This new agenda will set clear commitments to deliver on concrete endeavours and partnerships that will make our world more resilient to the effects of climate change.

Anchoring Event – Accelerating African Adaptation: Unlocking Action

This anchoring event aims at raising ambition and unlocking action for accelerated African adaptation. Sigrid Kaag, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of the Netherlands, hosts the first part of the programme that is geared towards unlocking global ambition in African adaptation. It will see a variety of African stakeholders share their vision for a climate-resilient future, discussing the challenges and opportunities and sharing promising initiatives.

In the lead up to this event, CCAFS, together with Wageningen University & Research, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, held a series of virtual dialogues through January on how to make African food systems more resilient to climate change, and the key findings of stimulating dialogues will feed into this anchoring event.

Anchoring Event – Agriculture & Food Security

This anchoring event, hosted by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, brings together key leaders to commit to new actions and drive forward global efforts in agriculture, food security and climate change.

Several partner organisations and governments will announce major new commitments and launch fresh initiatives to enhance resilient agriculture of over 300 million small-scale food producers in the face of mounting climate impacts.

This event is made up of several blocks, where these new initiatives will be shared to inform global adaptation action.

The first initiative block focuses on demand-driven innovation, and will feature the Rt Hon Lord Goldsmith, UK Minister for Pacific and the Environment at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) who will officially launch a new campaign co-chaired by CCAFS and FCDO–Transforming Agricultural Innovation for Climate, Nature and People–ahead of COP26.

Martien van Nieuwkoop, Global Director for the Agriculture and Food Global Practice at the World Bank, will present the new $60 million CCAFS-led project ‘Accelerating the Impact of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa’ (AICCRA).

Martien will present AICCRA’s vision for transforming agricultural innovation in Africa, and will also announce the World Bank’s support to the Transforming Agricultural Innovation for Climate, Nature and People campaign.

Meanwhile, Carola Schouten, Deputy Prime Minister of the Netherlands and Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, will speak about the links between research on climate change and land use to policy decisions, and will also announce the Dutch government’s support of the Transforming Agricultural Innovation for Climate, Nature and People campaign.  

Claudia Sadoff, Managing Director at CGIAR, will also provide remarks which address the session themes, focusing on the critical need to secure funding for breakthrough research to develop new solutions for low-emissions, resilient agriculture.

The third initiative block focuses on the new Investment Blueprint for Digital Climate Advisory Services (DCAS Investment Blueprint) that will reach 300 million smallholder producers by 2030. This ground-breaking work is led by the Global Commission on Adaptation and its partners – the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), the World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the World Business Council on Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The blueprint was informed by the work of Alison Rose and Stephen Zebiak. 

His Excellency Dr. Mandefro Nigussie, Ethiopia’s State Minister for Agriculture, will also provide remarks during this session, focusing on Ethiopia’s significant investment in digital platforms to provide farmers with information to boost their incomes and make them more resilient.

The fourth initiative block will focus on the Africa Improved Foods public-private partnership, how it can help develop more climate resilient value chains that reach 100 million consumers across Africa, and raise $1 billion of private sector investment. Planned roll-outs of the program in Ethiopia and Kenya have been partly-informed by the work of International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). 

Finally, and just before UN Special Envoy for the 2021 Food Systems Summit Agnes Kalibata closes this anchoring event, Claudia Sadoff will officially launch the CGIAR 2030 Research and Innovation Strategy. 

CAS 2021 side event - Stakeholder voices and global R4D topics in the Two Degree Initiative for Food and Agriculture

The ‘Two Degree Initiative’ (2DI) is a coalition of hundreds of like-minded partner organizations from around the world. They are brought together with a single unifying vision – to transform the global food system for a climate-smart future. 

2DI’s ambition is to reach 200 million farmers through ten participating Regional Challenges that include projects in low- and middle-income countries. It organizes its projects around a set of themes that align with a rigorous theory of change developed by CCAFS. 

In this CAS 2021 side event, CCAFS and the World Resources Institute (WRI) - summarized the key outcomes of the 2DI Listening Sessions - which involved over fifty virtual meetings with more than a thousand stakeholders – as well as the emerging Research for Development (R4D) flagships. The messages emanating from the Listening Sessions are the focus of a new report launched to coincide with CAS 2021.

CAS 2021 sister summit - Youth for Climate Adaptation Conference

Before CAS 2021 begins, the Dutch city of Groningen will host the Youth for Climate Adaptation Conference as part of Groningen Adaptation Week. CCAFS will link youth from all around the world to inspire a new generation to take up and utilize cutting edge science to meet the challenges of climate change, agriculture and food security.

In the interactive workshop, we will debate how to collaborate and face up to huge challenges in food security and climate change globally, pinpointing actions for young people with youth movement leaders drawn from Latin America, Africa and Asia.

Our goal? Simple. We want to inspire, educate and empower 10 million young people from around the world to be climate champions by 2025. Starting with little steps by making a difference in their own communities, we want to see them grow into an unstoppable global movement.

We challenge you to be the generation that says yes - to adapt for a most sustainable planet, to adapt for a brighter future.

CCAFS’ Bruce Campbell will be joined by Viktoria de Bourbon de Parme, Patron of Save the Children Netherlands and food transformation lead at the World Benchmarking Alliance, and young climate champions Sebastián Pedraza Paez from Colombia, Victor Mugo from Kenya and Niharika Singh from India.
