Official side event at the Bonn Climate Change Conference 2018.

30th April 2018, 16:15 - 18:45

World Conference Center Bonn, Kaminzimmer Room

The agriculture sector faces a three-pronged challenge in the context of climate change. Firstly, it must produce more food to feed a growing world population. Secondly, in order to do this, it must overcome negative impacts of climate change on crops, livestock and fisheries. And thirdly, as a significant contributor to greenhouse gases (19-29% of global anthropogenic emissions), it must reduce emissions by 2030 to achieve the global goal of limiting warming to 2oC.

To meet these challenges, agricultural development must go beyond business-as-usual. But because these challenges make poverty alleviation through agricultural development more difficult, developed and developing countries have long disagreed on priorities for the agriculture sector. It is in spite of this longstanding disagreement that a decision was made at the 23rd UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP) to establish the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture, signaling support on all sides for an agricultural transformation.

To ensure food security, adapt to climate change impacts, and achieve the 2ºC target, a transformation in the agricultural sector is imperative. This event will present a framework for agricultural transformation, building on the work of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) and partners at COP23, and examine how countries, farmers, and researchers can contribute to realizing this.

Priorities for an action agenda to transform agriculture under climate change, presented at COP23.
