Project description

In line with previous national efforts to increase food security in Niger, the High Commission of the 3N (HC3N) and the Word Bank planned a USD 111 million investment in climate-smart agriculture activities to increase agricultural productivity and enhance drought resilience of agro-sylvo-pastoral systems in the country. This project is built on larger CSA objectives and constitutes a technical support partnership for the HC3N-WB initiative between four research institutions that have extensive experience in promoting the three CSA pillars (productivity, adaptation, and mitigation) in Niger: National Institute of Agronomic Research of Niger (INRAN), the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics  (ICRISAT), CCAFS, and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). The collaboration aims to build institutional and technical synergies and tap into the different experience in promoting CSA, through identifying and promoting demand-driven innovations that help improve agricultural productivity, natural resource management, and economic growth for small-scale farmers in Niger. A particular emphasis will be placed on systems diversification, which includes cereals, legumes, vegetables, agroforestry, and livestock.

The project aims to contribute the strategic objectives of the Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) of the World Bank in Niger, which are to assist the country to achieve resilient growth, reduce vulnerability and strengthen capacity for service delivery.

Activities

The project involves local partners and policymakers in order to influence potential policy changes and district level recommendations to enhance agricultural productivity.

The project plans to provide proven CSA approaches, tools, technologies and practices to promote CSA in Niger. They will contribute to the objective of the Agriculture Risk Management Plan (PAGRA) developed by the government of Niger with the support of the Word Bank to help build resilience of the agricultural sector in the country.

Expected outcomes

The project aims to improve the adoption of best bet climate-smart agricultural practices that enhance the resilience of farmers and their farmlands to climate change. It also plans to open new income streams to enhance the adoption of CSA practices.
