The conference objective is to achieve a legally binding and universal agreement on climate, from all the nations of the world. CCAFS and partners are working to ensure that a new climate deal does not close the door on Agriculture. The list of activities will be frequently updated.

1 December 2015 (all day): Agriculture Action Day under the Lima-Paris Action Agenda

The LPAA "Focus on Agriculture" at COP21 aims to show that the transition to a climate-resilient and low-GHG agriculture is feasible and already underway by showcasing existing solutions. Parties, organisations, and businesses will announce concrete, ambitious, multi-stakeholder initiatives to be included in the LPAA (More information).

2 December 2015, 15:00-16:30 (part of Farmers Day): Partnering to scale-up climate-smart agriculture in Africa: from policy to tangible impact

  • Action is happening across Africa, from piloting of policies to creation of institutions, in order to support grass-root scaling-up of climate-smart agriculture (CSA), to build resilience and livelihoods of African small-scale farmers in a changing climate. Session will explore innovative partnership approaches to achieve CSA. The session will share experiences from the Africa Climate-Smart Agriculture Alliance.

2 December 2015, 18:30-20:00: Colombia tackles climate change: Forests, agriculture and land use in a national green growth vision

  • Colombia will present its approach and commitments for mitigation and adaptation in the AFOLU sector outlined in the INDC; with key examples of progress in its Amazon Vision program and development of the National REDD+ Strategy; and linkages and challenges for the forestry and agricultural sectors.

4 December: Africa Pavilion side events

4 December 2015, 14:00 - 15:30: Scaling up innovative approaches to climate-smart agriculture in Africa

  • This event will highlight innovative approaches to climate-smart agriculture in Africa that can be part of INDC implementation, and showcase solutions for smallholder farmers in Africa. Focus will be on climate-smart agriculture (CSA), including adaptation, mitigation and food security.

4 December 2015, 18:00 - 19:30: Taking forward the implementation of national climate-smart agriculture programmes in East Africa

  • This event will provide an opportunity to dialogue on the appropriate policy and financing mechanism to scale-up the adoption of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices in defined farming systems in Africa. The event will build on experiences drawn from the program on “supporting preparation of country CSA programs in five countries in eastern and southern Africa”.

5 December 2015, 12:00-14:00: Environmental and climate compatible agriculture

  • This event will explore how modernizing the farming practices impacts both environmental and social aspects for smallholder farmers

5 December 2015, 16:00-17:30: Radical Adaptation - far-reaching and far-sighted

  • This session is part of the Development & Climate days that will feature dynamic, interactive discussion, including participatory games, lightning talks, role-play discussions, two high-level panels, and more.

5 December 2015, 10:00 - 11:30: Climate-Smart Food Systems for Enhanced Nutrition

  • This session at the Africa Pavilion is organised by the Global Panel on Nutrition. Achieving food security and improved nutrition (undernutrition and obesity) for countries impacted by the effects of climate change requires commitment and action at all policy levels. Climate-smart agriculture must consider options for investments through a nutrition and diet quality lens.

5 December 2015, 15:30-17:00: Shaping sustainable supply chains of the future: How to create links between smallholder farmers, companies sourcing raw materials, and the environment

  • Global Landscapes Forum side event will examine sustainable-sourcing solutions, including new supply chain models in Guatemala, India and Kenya.

6 December 2015, 09:00-13:15: GLF side event - From farmer’s fields to landscapes: Food security in a new climate regime?

Investing in agriculture is critical if we want to reduce poverty, address climate change, and tackle hunger.  A climate change agreement in Paris is not likely to explicitly address agriculture – but countries are leading the way, by including action on agriculture in their Intended Nationally Determined Commitments (INDCs). 

Will these pledges be enough to deliver food security for billions of people and reduce agriculture’s climate change footprint? What further actions, commitments and finance are needed to safeguard the future of food and farming?

The side event will consist of three interrelated sessions on ensuring food security under climate change through policies, integrated land use, new technologies and practices, and empowering women and youth.

6 December 2015, 14:50-15:35: Gender Pavilion - GLF: Transforming Climate Change Adaptation - Sharing lessons and best practices from gender integration. 

  • The gender pavilion will consist of a few moderated group discussions with the objective of highlighting experiences and carving out best practices of integrating gender in climate change mitigation projects and programs.
  • Partners: CARE International, Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA), and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

5 December 2015 11:30 – 18:00; 6 December 08:30 – 18:00 CCAFS –Mitigation Options Tool (CCAFS-MOT) Featured at the GLF Landscapes Laboratory. – 10 minutes to learn about climate change mitigation in agriculture. 

  • An accessible advice tool on practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture. We are eager to trigger discussion around the implementation of these practices in different world regions and production systems.

7 December 2015, 13:15-14:45: Strategic climate change partnerships: opportunities and actions in developing countries

  • An interactive event to highlight the role of strategic partnerships and policies in implementing climate change actions. Participants will discuss Climate Change legislation; low emissions development; Climate Smart Agriculture; renewable energy resources; and SLEEK-land sector MRV system.

7 December 2015, 15:00-16:45: Scaling up climate-smart agriculture in the context of climate change

  • This event will put forward a positive, actionable agenda on the climate-smart agriculture approach for countries and will call for a close collaboration with other stakeholder groups.

8 December 2015, 13:30-15:30: Climate change adaptation: Lessons and needs

  • This dialogue addresses the need for climate change adaptation, especially in the face of increasing climate extremes, and recent lessons from adaptation actions.

10 December 2015, 11:30-13:00: Carbon sequestration and agriculture
