Farmers at the Nyando Climate Smart Villages will host a number of journalists on  5-6 September. The journalists will learn about, and document, climate-smart practises in Nyando, Western Kenya. They will also be introduced to institutions and policies that promote food security.

Since 2011, farmers in the Nyando Climate-Smart Villages have been working with researchers, development partners and government extension agents to test a portfolio of promising climate change adaptation, mitigation and risk management interventions.

We have adopted an integrated approach that involves partnerships to test agricultural technologies for climate change adaptation and mitigation. This entails provision of weather information to farmers. Additionally, farmers are able to access social insurance through savings and microfinance to trial agricultural innovations such as greenhouse farming and drip irrigation given variable rainfall” James Kinyangi, CCAFS East Africa Regional Program Leader.

Valuable lessons are emerging from the interventions being implemented and could feed into national planning processes for instance the National Climate Change Action Plan 2013 – 2017 (NCCAP). It is against this background that CCAFS East Africa is organising a journalists visit to the Nyando Climate-Smart Villages on 5-6 September 2013.

The objectives of the visit are:

  • To showcase Climate Smart Practices in Nyando, Western Kenya
  • Highlight institutions and policies to promote food security
    • Showcase a new way of working through partnerships
    • Influence a call to include private sector in providing farmers with agro-advisories
