Project description

The project supports regional, continental and global processes to fully contribute to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) work program on agriculture, specifically supporting the African Group of Negotiators (AGN), policy makers, civil society organizations and marginalized groups to build their capacity to participate in policy development to improve food security and climate-smart agriculture. Together with the CCAFS Flagship on Priorities and Policies for climate-smart agriculture (CSA), this project also supports the sharing of emerging research findings with policymakers through learning alliances where participants, among them government representatives and researchers, share and present interdisciplinary agriculture and climate change research, knowledge, solutions, and experiences. Use of online platforms will be explored through the Climate and Agriculture Network for Africa (CANA). At the national level, the project works with the Ministries of Agriculture and Environment, CGIAR centers, private sector, NGOs and other stakeholders to support the piloting of CSA priority actions in the region as identified in the nationally determined contributions (NDCs), national adaptation plans (NAPS) and other relevant climate change and agriculture policies and strategies.  This project also supports the development of guidelines and decision support tools for CSA practices.

Outputs

Gender and youth

This project supports the integration of gender and social differentiation dimensions into global and national climate change and agriculture policy development and implementation. Women and youth are targeted in many national adaptation plans. The project aims to undertake an analysis of how key priority adaptation actions in the agriculture sector map onto the needs and potential for women and youth and are reflected in national and subnational strategies to implement adaptation in CSA programs.
