Two Degree Initiative (2DI)

About the Two Degree Initiative

CGIAR is already on track to help improve the livelihood opportunities of hundreds of millions of small-scale farming families and consumers by 2030 through better, more productive, resilient and sustainable crop, livestock and fish technologies and agro-ecological practices, and improved nutrition.

To build on these efforts, the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), its Center and external partners have put together the “Two Degree Initiative,” a coalition of partners with the ambition to reach significant climate change, poverty, nutrition and environmental targets. The initiative will focus on low- and middle-income countries and work on a set of global themes that align with a theory of change for transforming the food system.

The Two Degree Initiative will initially focusses on 8 geographically-focussed challenges, selected because they are strategic in terms of urgent climate action. While they are geographically focussed, they are also intended to be exemplars for action in other regions should they be successful. For each Challenge, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and Challenge partners are conducting a series of stakeholder meetings, or "listening sessions", are being conducted to develop locally-defined targets and research agendas, and to initiate the process of partnership building. Given COVID-19 these meeting are currently all virtual, but hopefully some physical meetings will be possible later this year.
