Senior Scientist/Scientist –Climate-smart agriculture (West and Central Africa)

ICRISAT is seeking applications from a dynamic and highly innovative climate-smart agriculture (CSA) specialist to implement the project: ‘’Projet d’Assistance Technique long-terme au Ministère de l’Environnement et du Développement Durable du Niger’’. The scientist will be based at ICRISAT Niamey, Niger, and work under the supervision of the Regional Program Leader of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS).

Responsibilities:

  • Capacitate stakeholders through trainings on climate-smart agricultural approaches, tools and options to support the mainstreaming of CSA into PARC-DAD (Projet d’appui à la résilience climatique pour un développement agricole durable au Niger) projects implementation.
  • Support CSA mainstreaming in the targeted communal and regional development plans in Niger.
  • Coordinate institutional learning activities that supports multi-sectoral planning and programming of CSA mainstreaming activities in the framework of i3N.
  • Capacitate the country’s science-policy dialogue platform on climate change and agriculture to enhance informed advisory for policy decision making on climate-smart agriculture.
  • Support steering committee meetings, prepare technical and financial reports, seminar papers and publish scientific papers out of the results of the technical assistance.
  • Monitor project results through geo-referencing of rehabilitated sites.
  • Contribute to and implement resources mobilization strategies.

Requirements:

  • PhD in systems agronomy, climate change, environmental science or any related field, with a minimum of 5 years’ post-doctoral experience

Competencies:

  • Experience with participatory action research methods and with adult training in agriculture and climate change.
  • Ability to work and foster synergies and promote engagement among multiple organizations for mainstreaming climate change into national development plans and policies.
  • Ability to write good technical reports and to develop policy briefs and scientific articles.
  • Excellent written and spoken French with good skills in English.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with people in a multi-disciplinary environment and to be an effective team player.

This is an Internationally Recruited Staff (IRS) position with a competitive salary and benefits package payable in US Dollars. The position is initially for two years and extendable depending on performance of the incumbent and funding availability.
