Scales & Diversity, in a context of food security & sustainability, is the theme of this conference held in Uppsala at the Swedish University of Agriculture Sciences. The event is organized by the four networks: The Swedish Research Network Sustainanble Agriculture and Forestry for Development (Agri4D); the Swedish International Agricultural Network (SIANI); Focali and Future Forest. The issues that will be discussed are all interrelated in the contemporary development, policy and scientific discourses.

The theme encompasses everything from climate change and carbon sequestration on the global scale to opportunities and constraints for production on the local scale, large scale monoculture plantation to subsistence agriculture, forest conservation and local goat breeds as well as market accessibility, management, land tenure, REDD+ and local/national/regional/global/private/public/gendered power relations.

Furthermore, the issues contain scientific and policy related controversies. The organizers intend the conference to be a forum for balanced and science based discussions on ways forward. And on how science can/could/should contribute to make this world a better one.

Distinguished international guests will give key note presentations on pertinent research and/or developmental questions. Individual participants are invited to present their research/project in parallel sessions. Sessions will be thematic (sub-themes in Scales & Diversity) and led by a session leader who will also give a session key note presentation. Some theme titles and content is pre-organized but will also depend on participants’ contributions.

Bruce Campbell, Director of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), will be one of the keynote speaker.
