Insurance for rural resilience and economic development (INSURED)
While system shocks affect both women and men, gendered vulnerabilities may make it more difficult for women to respond to and recover from shocks. Adding to their vulnerability, women often face barriers to risk management tools and the formal financial sector. Given the importance of women to the agricultural sector in developing countries, inclusive agriculture insurance will not only protect the livelihoods and investments of women but strengthen the overall sector.
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) manages the Insurance for Rural Resilience and Economic Development (INSURED) programme through the Platform for Agricultural Risk Management (PARM). The project is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and is a collaborative effort with The George Washington University (GWU).
The tool includes a checklist for the design and implementation of agricultural and climate risk insurance with a focus on the female farming community, such as identifying groups within the community of women farmers, the creation of insurance tools that are relevant for both women and men, and the collection of sex-disaggregated data.
