Ensuring zero agriculture land expansion on high-carbon landscapes

Add to Calendar
This session seeks to explore the drivers behind conversion of forest to agriculture and what leads to the conversion of agricultural land to forest.

The land use sector is the second largest source of emission in South East Asia and also presents unique opportunities for reducing the magnitude of climate change. The loss of carbon stocks through agricultural land-use change is a key driver of greenhouse gas emissions  and the methods used to manage agricultural land will have major impacts on the global climate in the 21st  century. The agriculture and forestry sector can mitigate climate impacts on land, and secure livelihoods in  rural areas in the process.

The proposed session titled “Ensuring zero agriculture land expansion on high-carbon landscapes”, will focus on how sustainable agricultural productivity can enable us to meet global food needs up to 2050, without requiring further conversion of high-carbon forests, peatlands and grasslands. The session will also focus on policies to effectively regulate market demand, and location and expansion of commodity crops and livestock production ensure food security while avoiding loss of high-carbon landscapes.

Speakers would delibrate on effectively harnessing opportunities for mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) through better management and efforts to reduce pressure on the carbon stored in forests, peatlands and wetlands. The session would include a framing presentation followed by an interview/ discussion session with the partners to understand trade-offs and opportunities in mitigating GHGs through better management of carbon stocks through agricultural land-use change.
