CIMMYT Vacancy: Post-Doctoral Fellow | ‘Scaling Readiness of Nutrient Management Decision Support Tools’
Main purpose of the position
We are seeking an outstanding, motivated candidate for the position of Post-Doctoral Research Fellow investigating ‘Scaling readiness of Nutrient Management Decision Support Tools (DSTs) in different institutional environments; Ethiopia and Tanzania’. The position offers a career opportunity for a researcher interested in understanding and improving the advice (provision) needs of agricultural knowledge providers (such as extensionists, agro-dealers, input providers, etc.) and smallholder farmers with impact in East Africa (Ethiopia/Tanzania). The successful candidate will work in the Sustainable Intensification Program as a member of the Taking Maize Agronomy to Scale (TAMASA) project, and in collaborations with other CGIAR Research Programs working on similar decision support tools. This position will contribute to improve the delivery and uptake of nutrient management advisory tools that aim to increase African maize production while avoiding increases in greenhouse gas emissions. Working directly with different types of farmers and advisory services, the project examines the ‘user logics’ and institutional environments that affect the large-scale uptake of these climate-smart nutrient management advisory tools by smallholder farmers in Ethiopia and Tanzania.
Main responsibilities
Mapping and analyzing the institutional environments of (DST-based) nutrient advice delivery.
Analyzing and understanding different farmer nutrient management practices, nutrient use logics and nutrient use knowledge gaps in specific research sites.
Analyzing ‘user logics’ of different types of knowledge service providers (agro-dealers, agribusiness, extension, etc.).
Working closely with agronomists, soil scientists and social scientists in the development of different types of decision support tools for nutrient advice targeting users operating at different scales.
Preparing trainings and training materials for decision support tool workshops with various types of users.
Disseminating complex and conceptual ideas arising from the project to stakeholders and peers using a range of media, and presenting the results of the research to academic and policy audiences (including through the writing of peer-reviewed journal articles and policy briefs, and at international conferences).
Location: The position is based at CIMMYT’s office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and will involve significant international travel.
Closing date: This position will remain open until filled.
How to apply: Candidates must apply online to IRS18112_PDF on 'Scaling readiness of Nutrient Management Decision Support Tools'. Screening and follow up will begin on Friday, 9 March 2018.
