High Level Science Policy Session: Building research-policy linkages for climate smart agriculture in West Africa.

The CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) West Africa program will convene a High level science policy session that will bring together prominent regional and national experts on climate change, research and policy-making to discuss climate change situation in the region, highlight major research needs and explore how CCAFS work in West Africa can contribute to the mainstreaming of climate change into regional and national rural development plans and policies, through research activities that support climate risk management, adaptation and mitigation options.

This High Level Policy Session will serve as a strategic platform to engage policy-makers, researchers and other stakeholders in a positive discourse for more informed research and policy debates regarding challenges and opportunities.

It will also provide insights into recommendations and actions needed to link up research and policy for the promotion of climate-smart agriculture in small scale farming systems in West Africa.

The objectives of this High Level Policy Session are to:

- Discuss state-of-the-art knowledge on the impact of climate change on agriculture in West Africa and analyze challenges and opportunities,

- Highlight research needs to address these challenges,

- Strengthen research-policy linkages and,

- Discuss policy options.

Expected outcomes

Strengthening of linkages between research and policy- makers that is needed to feed into priorities agenda setting at both national and regional level for mainstreaming climate change issues into rural development policies;

Enhanced understanding of and opportunities within the CCAFS program to advance knowledge and policy orientation regarding the interlinkage between climate change, agriculture and food security;

Recommendations on actions to overcome the challenges and better utilize the opportunities to strengthen research and policy linkages in addressing climate change issues at both national and regional levels in West Africa.
