COP22 will take over the reins from COP21 during which important progress was made. It will focus on action items in order to achieve the priorities of The Paris Agreement, especially related to adaptation, transparency, technology transfer, mitigation, capacity building and loss and damages.


Overview of CCAFS activities:

7 November 2016, 16:45-18:15, Mediterranean room (Blue zone): Improving MRV for agricultural emission reductions in the livestock sector

To accelerate implementation of the Paris Agreement, we will facilitate a science-policy dialogue on measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) to detect mitigation impacts in livestock production systems. Country experiences will be shared to identify practical innovations for the collection and coordination of activity data and improved emission factors.

Organizers: CCAFS and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Livestock Research Group of the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA).

8 November 2016, 10:30-12:30, Blue zone: Adaptation au changement climatique de l’agriculture au Maghreb

Cet évènement offrira une visibilité internationale au projet "Adaptation de l’agriculture au changement climatique au Maghreb" (ACCAGRIMAG) et s’interessera aux bénéfices et défis de la mise en place de dispositifs de gestion du risque climatique en agriculture, avec un focus sur le lien entre adaptation et assurance.

The side event will feature lessons learned after three years of Adaptation for Smallholder Agriculture Programme (ASAP) operation and present the recommendations generated on how to strengthen gender equality and women’s empowerment in agriculture adaptation programmes.

9 November 2016, 14:30-16:00, EU Pavilion (Blue zone): Enhancing resilience of Southeast Asian agriculture to climate change

In the context of the ASEAN member states efforts to prioritize climate actions in the agriculture sector, this side event will highlight challenges related to climate change faced by South East Asian countries, and showcase actions at the regional and national level to respond to challenges.

9 November 2016, 18:30-20:00, Pacific room (Blue zone): Economic advantage of agriculture in NDCs

This side event will present new financial evidence and analysis including likely returns on investment to women and men smallholder farmers. Panellists from Africa and Asia will provide numbers and insights from current country-level investments in adaptation and mitigation in agriculture.

10 November 2016, 14:00-17:30, Japan Pavilion: International Agricultural Research Cooperation for Climate Change

This side event will provide an opportunity for all participants to follow the existing initiatives, in particular, GRA, GACSA, 4/1000 Initiative, and GSP in a concerted manner and will act as a “catalyst” for facilitating the development of these initiatives, further.

Dr James Hansen, CCAFS Flagship leader on Climate-risk management, will give a presentation on Agricultural climate insurance as a tool to address climate change impacts.

11 November 2016, 14:00-16:00, Thai Pavilion: Common challenges, common solutions: Collective actions to enhance resilience of South East Asian agriculture

This side event will: (i) articulate regional and national priorities for climate action in the agricultural sector, (ii) showcase regional and national level actions to address priorities, including through South-South cooperation mechanisms, and (iii) develop partnerships with relevant organizations and networks to further scale out climate actions in the region.

12 November 2016, 15:00-16:30, Italian Pavilion (Blue zone): Investment opportunities for scaling up climate-smart agriculture

The side event will bring together leading experts from various sectors including international organizations, financial institutions as well as government and research to discuss investment opportunities for CSA in the future, building on lessons learned from current success stories.

13 November 2016, 10:00-18:00, Palais des Congrès de Marrakech: Adaptation of African Agriculture

The conference will provide a platform for national governments, local practitioners, farmer organisations and civil society to present, reflect upon experiences, and share success stories and approaches to enhance food security, resilience and productivity in the agricultural systems. It will provide an opportunity to inform the Adaptation of African Agriculture (AAA) initiative, which aims to transform agriculture in Africa.

This session is moderated by Sonja Vermeulen, Head of Research at CCAFS.

The session will discuss practical solutions for climate-smart agriculture as a response to challenges as diverse as deforestation, soil and nutrient management, food loss and waste, and the protection of smallholder farmers.

A sustainable agricultural sector, with a sustainable production and consumption, requires young people engagement: it is time to start considering a youth-centered approach, giving youth the possibility to be agropreneurs. These and additional issues will be discussed during the side event that will feature the intervention from the different stakeholders working in the farming sector.
