Persistent yield gaps, poverty and climate vulnerability are apparent in much of sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Central America. There are many well-known climate-resilient practices that would improve productivity, but adoption is low. Market-based approaches can provide incentives to adopt climate-smart practices, if producers see the benefits to their livelihoods. However, high risks to production and marketing, including climate risks, need to be overcome with gender equality and youth integration as critical components. For climate-resilient innovations and low emissions practices to be successfully marketed, adopted and applied, local and small-scale food entrepreneurs need support from both the policy and private business sectors. Governments play an essential role by introducing policies and laws that support the roll-out of innovative products or processes.  

 

With a focus on East Africa, this session will discuss how public and private stakeholders are enabling the scaling out of climate-resilient and low emissions practices such as  as micro-irrigation, climate-resilient seeds and breeds, agroforestry, use of slow release fertilizer etc. through enabling markets, digitization and incentives.
