Kenya county climate risk profiles

Informing sub-national climate smart agriculture investments in Kenya: county climate risk profiles

CIAT has developed 31 county climate risk profiles to guide climate-smart agriculture (CSA) investments and priorities at sub national level in Kenya. In every county, key value chain commodities are identified, the most problematic climatic hazards are outlined, and a mapping of the vulnerabilities and risks posed by these hazards across the value chain is discussed.

The profiles provide an analysis of the underlying causes of vulnerability, ongoing adaptation strategies and existing off-farm services available for combating the risks associated with the hazards, with recommendations for potential adaptation options.

The profiles also give snapshots of the enabling environment for building resilience by giving a synthesis on the policy, institutional and governance context, and possible pathways to be pursued to build institutional capacities for effective redress of potential future climate risks.

The profiles have contributed to the development of the US$ 250M Kenya CSA project. The World Bank stipulates that counties must have a risk profile, and prioritize interventions for the specific context.

CIAT developed the profiles in partnership with the Kenya Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MALF) and as part of the Kenya Climate-Smart Agriculture Project (KCSAP) supported by the World Bank (WB), and the Kenya Adaptation to Climate Change in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (KACCAL) project, supported by a grant from the Global Environmental Facility (GEF)/ Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF) through the World Bank (WB).
