Assessing agricultural emissions baseline

Assessing agricultural emissions baseline

Background

This research targets the application of remote sensing and biogeochemical modeling for assessment of agricultural GHG emissions at CCAFS benchmark sites and opportunities for GHG mitigation.

Objectives

To research the application of remote sensing and biogeochemical modeling for assessment of agricultural GHG emissions at CCAFS benchmark sites and opportunities for GHG mitigation

Activities

  • refining methodologies for mapping land cover in support of crop modeling of soil carbon, greenhouse gas emissions and crop yields
  • acquiring satellite data benchmark sites in East and West Africa
  • remote sensing based maps of land cover and cropping systems for benchmark sites, selected by CCAFS based on availability of data, and
  • DNDC modeling of GHG emissions and crop yields under current climate conditions and future climate change scenarios for 4-5 benchmark sites
  • report on application of remote sensing and biogeochemical modeling for assessment of agricultural GHG emissions at CCAFS benchmark sites and opportunities for GHG mitigation

Outputs

  1. Satellite data for all benchmark sites
  2. Image processing algorithms for mapping crops and land cover for GHG modeling.
  3. Site scales maps of agricultural and crops areas for 4-5 benchmark sites,
  4. DNDC model estimates of GHG, soil carbon sequestration and crop yields for 4-5 benchmark sites.
  5. a technical report, on application of remote sensing and biogeochemical modeling for assessment of agricultural GHG emissions at CCAFS benchmark sites and opportunities for GHG mitigation
