Side-event, informing about Africa’s efforts to bring out practical and grassroot-based action on agriculture and climate change. Open to all.

This side event aims to showcase progress, experiences and lessons from the recent intensive work to support the scaling up of CSA in agriculture productivity, food security and poverty alleviation programmes.

It is jointly convened by the NEPAD Agency, the governments of Senegal and members of the NEPAD-iNGO CSA Alliance, including Catholic Relief Service (CRS), World Vision International, CARE International, Oxfam, and Concern Worldwide; and technical partners Food and Agriculture Orgnaization of the United Nations (FAO), Food Agrciulture and Natural Resource Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN), Forum for Agriculture Research in Africa (FARA) and CGIAR research program on Climate Change, Agriculture, and Food Security (CCAFS).

It will also feature a discussion of current and anticipated regional and continental level coordination and support for CSA through the NEPAD Agriculture and Climate Change Programme.

CSA will have significant impacts across several of the SDGs. The Side Event will specifically showcase field experiences focusing on:

  • Local initiatives and experiences demonstrating how CSA is empowering households and communities to directly and concretely realise, at local level, the SDG goals -- especially eliminating poverty and hunger, promoting sustainable agriculture, and combating climate change;
  • Showcase the NEPAD-iNGO CSA Alliance, as a result-based and grassroot-oriented mechanism, highlighting two main features of Africa’s development principles, namely (a) tested provisions and modalities to bring the support directly to grassroot communities; and (b) strengthening systemic capacity to determine and implement CSA support technologies, policies, and institutional arrangements; and (c) sharing experiences with regional and continental support for CSA, including discussion of what activities might be implemented under the NEPAD Agriculture Climate Change Programme.
