Événements

CCAFS will co-host and participate in several events at SB50.

Background

Since 2009, CCAFS has sustained an engagement with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process in order to inform outcomes related to sustainable agriculture and food security.

Last year, during the first part of SB48, held in Bonn, the SBI & SBSTA jointly agreed on a set of workshops on the KJWA until SB53 in 2020 (See Annex 1, report of the SBI on SB48). The KJWA presents an opportunity for countries to work together to ensure that agricultural development results in both increased food security in the face of climate change, and a reduction in emissions. Originally, the joint work of SBI and SBSTA put focus on the need for a connection between research and implementation. Now, the decision to focus on further workshops without a mandate for action is underwhelming (see CCAFS blog).

At COP24, an in-session workshop was organized on ‘Modalities for implementation of the outcomes of the five in-session workshops on issues related to agriculture and other future topics that may arise from this work’. However, concrete outcomes did not emerge (see CCAFS blog). However, KJWA is in its early days and the technical topics identified will only be discussed from SB50. The large number of submissions received indicate interest from both countries and observers in the topics proposed.

Objectives

Specific objectives are to:

  • Demonstrate how food systems policy change can catalyze the transformation in food systems needed in response to climate change, and lay out priorities for operationalizing such change.
  • Inform the dialogue on stepping up adaptation for agriculture in response to emerging evidence on rainfall changes for key crops.
  • Inform the dialogue on why soil carbon should be enhanced and the issues countries face in raising ambition through NDCs.
  • Inform the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture under the UNFCCC.
  • Discuss the role of local community solutions for increased ambition towards the Paris Agreement and the SDGs, in ways that deliver on the imperatives of adaptation, mitigation and equity.
